Yosemite Trail Running

Clouds Rest | Tioga Road, Tuolumne Meadows

Hey Substack community! We hope you all enjoyed your weekend and navigated this heat wave to the best of your ability during your long runs!

If this next clip doesn't get you excited for trail running season in the High Sierra I don't know what will. Clouds Rest in Yosemite National Park captures everyone's imagination when viewing it from Yosemite Valley.

This short edit takes us up the final granite steps of Clouds Rest as we approach the summit. Clouds Rest is the highest peak in Yosemite Valley, residing at 9,931' feet, which is 1,100' feet higher than the all impressive Half Dome to the south. Clouds Rest is a trail run everyone should have on their bucket list, whether you're tackling it from near by Tuolumne Meadows as I did, or if you're looking for the ultimate challenge and starting in Yosemite Valley. Nothing beats the views you are rewarded with once you top out this spectacular piece of granite. While I make a funny joke about the distance at the beginning of the video, the run actually did turn out to be close to what the Sierra Trail Runs book has it posted at. Altogether I clocked a little over 13 miles and slightly over 3,000' feet of elevation gain. While it's not bad, be prepared for some exposure as you near the summit as you'll see in the video, it made for a great end to one of my favorite runs in Yosemite.

Make sure to check out our Trail Running GPX page so you can download the route and upload it to your watch or phone. This GPX page will be a continuous work in progress so make sure to take advantage of the GPX files we already have posted and be sure to check back weekly as we continue to update the page.
