Hey Cirque Running Substack community, Happy Monday! Hope you’re all well enjoyed your weekend whether you hit the trails or just hung back and chilled with family and friends.
There are plenty of trail running options by the coast in San Diego, this one just happens to be very accessible for us and has many distance options. Calavera Lake, located in the city of Carlsbad in San Diego is an incredibly fun trail to run and explore in coastal north county. Calavera Lake hosts a very unique landmark, that being Calavera Volcano, a dormant mound of dirt rising 500' feet above Calavera Lake. Cero de la Calavera is one of three Southern California volcano plugs and is estimated to have last erupted over 22 million years ago!
In this short video we take you on our normal 4 mile loop that consists of a little over 600' feet of elevation gain. If we’re looking for additional mileage we either loop this twice, or you can also start further south at a different trailhead located by a nearby high school. Calavera Lake Preserve has a ton of options for distance and starting points so pick your poison. This route in particular circumnavigates the entirety of the lake and also tops out Calavera Volcano.
Make sure to check out our Trail Running GPX page so you can download the route and upload it to your watch or phone. This GPX page will be a continuous work in progress so make sure to take advantage of the GPX files we already have posted and be sure to check back weekly as we continue to update the page.
