Hey Cirque Substack community, hope you’re all doing well and enjoying the start to your week. I was recently up north running the Broken Arrow 46K and shot some fun runs along the way. We’ll have a few more Sierra videos dropping soon enough so stay tuned!
When looking for a quick trail rip in the Eastern Sierra, it's hard to beat the Mammoth Rock Trail in Mammoth Lakes, California. As I say in the video, if there was one trail you could run for the rest of your life, this might be it. Smooth trail surface, gradual elevation gain, with stunning views, it doesn't get much better than that.
There are a few starting options to take when running the Mammoth Rock Trail. For this video, we started on Sherwin Creek Road, just as the guide book, Sierra Trails Runs suggested. You could also start on Old Mammoth Road and reverse this route. Altogether we clocked around 7.5 miles and about 1,000' feet of elevation gain, so it's a great moderate route and one you can easily tick off if you're in the area and strapped for time.
Mammoth Lakes is near and dear to our hearts. We run tons of programming in the area through our parent company, Golden State Guiding, and know the area quite well. We should be back up there multiple times this season and will continue to film some more classics in the area. Mammoth Lakes is a great jumping off point for bigger adventures as well, so if you're looking to get some distance in the high country and are looking for suggestions, feel free to reach out and inquire, we'd be happy to help you plan a rad trip in the High Sierra!
Make sure to check out our Trail Running GPX page so you can download the route and upload it to your watch or phone. This GPX page will be a continuous work in progress so make sure to take advantage of the GPX files we already have posted and be sure to check back weekly as we continue to update the page.
